FAQs
Many issues could cause your air conditioner to lose its cooling ability, some of which include:
Refrigerant leak: refrigerant is a chemical that enables your AC to remove heat and humidity from the air, so if it starts leaking, the AC will start blowing lukewarm or warm air. Since this issue can lead to a total breakdown of the compressor, you’ll need an air conditioning Gainesville FL repair company.
Dirty filter: impeded airflow can be detrimental to the performance of your AC as it minimizes the amount of air reaching the unit. An extremely dirty filter could, in some cases, cause the AC to lose its cooling capability.
Condenser or evaporator coil problem: issues with either of these parts could lead to a major disruption in the performance of the AC unit, including hot air leaving the registers.
For the majority of issues with air conditioners that aren’t cooling, you’ll need to leverage AC repair Gainesville. However, if the problem isn’t all that serious, you can try:
- Replacing the filter
- Unclogging the condensate drain line
- Cleaning the coils
- Clearing out the area around the compressor and trimming any weeds or vines
If your AC seems to be struggling, it may only need a quick reset. Here are the steps necessary to reset an air conditioner:
- Shut down your AC at the breaker
- Find the reset button on your air conditioner (consult the owner’s manual if you can’t find it)
- Press the reset button and hold it down for five seconds
- Restore the power at the breaker and turn on your air conditioner
Some areas need 24/7 heating and cooling, and in those cases, units regularly go through a hefty amount of wear and tear. Still, the average lifespan of most HVAC systems is 15 years, so if you experience problems at the end of this period, it might make more sense to purchase a new system depending on the extent of the damage.
It’s also worth noting that newer units are much more energy-efficient, so it may be worth purchasing a new air conditioner for energy savings alone.

Why Insulation Is so Important for Your Home's Heating and Cooling
Did you know that the insulation in your home works just as well in the summer as in the winter? During the hot months of summer, it can help keep the warm air outside and keep the cool air inside, and during the cold months of winter, it can help keep warm air inside and cool air out.
If your home doesn’t have enough insulation, the hot or cold air outside is going to get inside, making your air conditioner and heater work harder.
How Does Insulation Work? Insulation is any material made to keep heat from transferring from one space to another. Home insulation acts as a barrier between the air temperature inside and the air temperature outside. Conductive heat transfer is the main way outside heat gets inside the home. For example, hot air heats up the exterior wall which in turn heats up the air inside the wall. That heats up the interior wall, heating up the air inside the house. Insulation will interrupt the heat conduction, preventing that transfer.
How Much Insulation Do You Need? The Department of Energy recommends that existing homes in this part of Florida should have between R-30 and R-60 insulation in the attic and between R-13 and R-19 in the floor. If you have uninsulated walls, they suggest drilling holes into each wall cavity and blowing insulation into the top.
How Do I Measure My Insulation? In order to check if you have enough insulation, take a tape measure up to the attic. If you have batt insulation, you have an R-value of 3 to 3.5 for every inch. So, four-inch-thick batt insulation translates to an R-value of between 12 and 14. To measure blown-in insulation, gently push the end of the tape measure until it hits the drywall attached to the underside of the joists. Its R-value will depend on what type it is. The r-value of loose fiberglass can range between 2.2 and 2.9 per inch. For loose stone wool, it’s between 2.2 and 3.3 per inch. For loose cellulose, it’s between 3.1 and 3.8 per inch.
If you find you don’t have enough insulation, you need to take action. It will keep your home comfortable through the hot, humid heat of a Florida summer as well as the cooler winter months.
