Why Insulation Is so Important for Your Home's Heating and Cooling

Did you know that the insulation in your home works just as well in the summer as in the winter? During the hot months of summer, it can help keep the warm air outside and keep the cool air inside, and during the cold months of winter, it can help keep warm air inside and cool air out.

If your home doesn’t have enough insulation, the hot or cold air outside is going to get inside, making your air conditioner and heater work harder.

How Does Insulation Work? Insulation is any material made to keep heat from transferring from one space to another. Home insulation acts as a barrier between the air temperature inside and the air temperature outside. Conductive heat transfer is the main way outside heat gets inside the home. For example, hot air heats up the exterior wall which in turn heats up the air inside the wall. That heats up the interior wall, heating up the air inside the house. Insulation will interrupt the heat conduction, preventing that transfer.

How Much Insulation Do You Need? The Department of Energy recommends that existing homes in this part of Florida should have between R-30 and R-60 insulation in the attic and between R-13 and R-19 in the floor. If you have uninsulated walls, they suggest drilling holes into each wall cavity and blowing insulation into the top.

How Do I Measure My Insulation? In order to check if you have enough insulation, take a tape measure up to the attic. If you have batt insulation, you have an R-value of 3 to 3.5 for every inch. So, four-inch-thick batt insulation translates to an R-value of between 12 and 14. To measure blown-in insulation, gently push the end of the tape measure until it hits the drywall attached to the underside of the joists. Its R-value will depend on what type it is. The r-value of loose fiberglass can range between 2.2 and 2.9 per inch. For loose stone wool, it’s between 2.2 and 3.3 per inch. For loose cellulose, it’s between 3.1 and 3.8 per inch.

I would like to take a minute to praise the people at Mid-Florida for going the extra mile fixing the Carrier Split Air unit they installed two years ago. The model was newly released at that time and proved subpar during the two years it ran. When it quit this last time the people at Mid Florida service went to bat for me with Carrier and had a completely new wall unit of an improved model sent and installed. All at no charge as they had determined the unit had not met specifications promised.
